One of the most rewarding aspects of Elden Ring is its flexible character-building system. Whether you favor brutal strength, nimble dexterity, devastating sorcery, or a hybrid approach, the game provides endless ways to customize your playstyle. However, jumping between builds can be daunting without the right Elden Ring items to support your choices. From my personal experience across multiple playthroughs, these seven essential items have allowed me to explore various builds without restarting my character.

Here are the must-have Elden Ring game items to buy or find if you want to experiment with different character styles effectively.

1. Larval Tear
Larval Tears are the key to respeccing your character's attributes at Rennala's Grand Library in Raya Lucaria Academy. You’ll need one every time you want to redistribute stats, making this item vital for trying new builds without starting from scratch.

Personal experience: I once went from a heavy armor tank to a glass cannon mage within an hour thanks to a Larval Tear. Farming or buying them makes rerolling quick and painless.

2. Radagon’s Scarseal / Marika’s Scarseal
These talismans boost specific stats significantly (Radagon’s for Strength, Marika’s for Mind) while slightly increasing damage taken. They’re perfect for testing a new build without needing to completely respec.

My tip: I often equipped Radagon’s Scarseal when I was just shy of the requirement to wield colossal weapons—it let me experiment without changing my build permanently.

3. Wondrous Physick Flask + Crystal Tears
The Flask of Wondrous Physick is incredibly customizable. Depending on the Crystal Tears you find, you can create temporary builds with stat buffs, increased elemental damage, or status effect resistance.

Example: When I wanted to test a faith-flame build, I used the Flame-Shrouding Cracked Tear to boost fire damage without fully investing in Faith stats.

4. Godrick’s Great Rune + Rune Arc
Activating Godrick’s Great Rune temporarily increases all your attributes. This is a fantastic way to try out different equipment or magic requirements before committing to a full stat investment.

Pro tip: I use this combo before dungeon runs to experiment with dual-wield builds that normally exceed my equipment load.

5. Mimic Tear Ashes
Although not a direct stat item, the Mimic Tear helps test how viable your current build is in actual combat. Since the summon copies your loadout, it’s a brilliant tool to see your build in action—especially in tight situations.

From my experience: Using the Mimic Tear helped me realize how poorly my mixed hybrid build performed in sustained fights. Watching my mimic struggle taught me more than any stat screen ever could.

6. Arsenal Charm / Erdtree’s Favor
Build testing often requires equipping new weapons and armor, which can throw your equip load out of balance. The Arsenal Charm boosts your maximum equip load, allowing you to test heavier weapons or armor before you respec Endurance.

Tip: I always keep Erdtree’s Favor equipped as well—it slightly increases HP, stamina, and equip load, giving me room to experiment without sacrificing survivability.

7. Glintstone Crown (e.g., Karolos, Azur)
These unique headpieces modify your Intelligence stat while reducing other attributes. They're excellent for magic-focused build testing. Want to try high-level sorceries but not ready to spec fully into INT? Pop on one of these crowns and see how it feels.

Personal anecdote: I used the Azur Glintstone Crown to reach 60 INT temporarily to test Comet Azur. It helped me decide to commit to the build—and I’ve never looked back since.

Elden Ring offers one of the most generous systems for experimentation in any modern RPG. Thanks to these Elden Ring items, I’ve been able to test everything from colossal weapon strength builds to finesse-based bleed katanas and even pure sorcery setups.

If you're thinking about diving into a new playstyle, these are the best Elden Ring game items to buy or collect to do it safely and effectively. Don’t be afraid to mix it up—some of my most fun moments came from builds I initially never considered.
